Saskatchewan industry group says producers are on high alert as highly pathogenic strain continues to circulate.

Kelvin said avian influenza is difficult to contain because it’s transmitted by migrating wild birds. North American migration routes have become overrun in the decade since the virus first showed up on the continent, she said.

With H5N1 proving to be more deadly for domesticated birds than variants that have come before, Kelvin suggested Canadian poultry producers may end up using vaccines, and added that VIDO could potentially develop ones that don’t trigger false positives.Article content Kelvin said about 7.2 million birds are believed to be infected with H5N1 in Canada, including about 500,000 in Saskatchewan.
