Air support units assisted in the pursuit and apprehension of five suspects linked to an attempted robbery at a Markham jewelry store over the weekend. Video footage released by the York Regional Police (YRP) on Wednesday captures the dramatic moments leading to the suspects' arrest. According to police, officers responded to a jewelry store in the Denison Street and Kennedy Road area around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Upon arrival, they observed two suspicious vehicles: one acting as a lookout and the other used to transport the suspects. The suspects were seen carrying sledgehammers and garbage bags as they approached the jewelry store. However, their attempt was thwarted as the business was closed for the day.The video shows the suspects leaving the store and walking through the parking lot, carrying garbage bags. An officer's voice can be heard directing colleagues, describing the suspects' appearance and movements. As the suspects are picked up by a waiting vehicle, police cruisers quickly surround and apprehend them, resulting in gunshots being fired. The footage captures the suspects fleeing in different directions, pursued by officers. Police managed to take five suspects into custody at the scene. A replica firearm was seized, and a stolen vehicle was recovered. The suspects, identified as 27-year-old Numan Khan, 21-year-old Tyrese Morgan, and three teenage boys aged 14 to 17, are facing charges related to the incident. Morgan, the 15-year-old, and the 17-year-old were already on release orders for unrelated offenses, according to police. The identities of the teenage suspects cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The charges against the suspects have not yet been tested in court. YRP issued a reminder to businesses to remain vigilant, install and maintain security systems, and consider locking doors and using a buzz-in system during nighttime or when valuable items are present
