The city’s annual review of its housing strategy found mixed results in increasing the supply and diversity of affordable and market housing

Victoria Mayor Marianne Alto hopes this is the last time the city’s housing report card comes with “needs improvement” written all over it.

“It’s not just us now looking at this as a critical priority,” she said. “It’s across the whole province.” The city did manage to hit its target for total homes in 2022, with 1,008 net building permits issued for new homes, and 419 building permits issued for new condos, well above the target of 150. “We want it to do what it was intended to do, and that’s to make it easier to build multi-unit family housing throughout the city. We’re going to try and make it simpler.”
