After beating Australia 21-12 in the Rugby 7's semi-finals at the Paris Summer Olympics on Tuesday morning , Canadas women rugby sevens squad faced the New Zealand Black Ferns in the gold medal match.New Zealand Black Ferns Co-captain Risealeanna Pouri-Lane scored the first try.
The Canadians returned fire with a try of their own, with Chloe Daniels and Alysha Corrigan scoring, the latter coming just before the end of the first half. Michaela Blyde helped the Kiwis leave the score at the start of the second half with a score of 14-12 to the New Zealanders. Black Fern Stacey Waaka's break-away run up the middle of the field brought the final score to 19-12.The Canadians scored 21 unanswered points before the Australians could put a single point on the board in the semi-final earlier in the day.
It is the best performance by a Canadian women's rugby seven squad since the 2016 Rio Games where the team won a bronze medal.The Canadian team trains in Langford and features Victoria's Caroline Crossley.
