A motion put forward by the mayor of Victoria to explore offering a tax exemption for some organizations to allow sheltering in parking lots has failed in a 5-4 vote.suggesting Victoria staff look into offering a property tax exemption for some non-profits and churches in the city who would allow temporary sheltering in their parking lots.
Victoria mayor’s motion explores using large parking lots of churches, non-profits for overnight sheltering “I do have a concern with Victoria continuing to try to do everything to build housing region, and I don’t know when we draw the line.” “Even if this got passed today, there’s still a bunch of work for council to do, which could put in various protections and conditions and considerations. So I think that risk to the neighbours is something that can be managed both by the organizations involved and in our policies.”
“I think that what the public is thinking, ‘Oh, we’re going to have unregulated sheltering, just like it was in the parks on church parking lots,’ and that’s just not what’s happening here.”
