A motion penned by the mayor asks council to explore the idea of turning portions of large parking lots into temporary overnight sheltering areas.

It’s a motion that comes with its share of reservations, but as far as housing solutions go, Victoria’s mayor says there’s a lot to like when it comes to parking lots of some churches and non-profits in the capital.

The mayor’s motion outlines 13 properties that fit the criteria of having a parking lot covering more than 50 per cent of the lot. The tax exemption covers the parking lot, and is being phased out by 20 per cent per year over a five-year period. Brett Hinch lives next door and doesn’t entirely dismiss the idea of using the space for overnight sheltering, but questions the city’s definition of “temporary.”

David Thomas has lived in James Bay for six years. “I’m shocked. It’s ludicrous that they would consider something like this as a solution,” he says.
