One person dead following makeshift shelter fire in Victoria; not considered suspicious

Posted: Nov. 21, 2022 5:30PMA fire that reportedly broke out in a tent or makeshift shelter in Victoria earlier this month and ultimately proved fatal is not suspicious, according to police.

However, authorities were unable to provide much more detail on what happened or the identity of the victim. The BC Coroners Service has confirmed one person died Sat., Nov. 12 in the fire at the corner of View and Cook streets. The blaze took place in front of the GIC Direct office at the corner of the intersection. Black scorch marks could still be seen on the side of the building Monday.Sign up for our newsletter to get breaking news and daily digests sent to your email.Firefighters were called to the incident and extinguished the fire and have since completed a post-fire investigation, according to the City of Victoria.

The investigation has now been turned over to the coroner’s service and Victoria Police, who would only confirm the incident is non-suspicious.
