Money will help with purchase and renovation of facility currently rented in Bastion Square
Greater Victoria’s francophone community has received a $1-million boost from the federal government to help with the purchase and renovation of its rented location in Bastion Square so it can become a regional hub.
“La Maison de la francophonie de Victoria will allow all of us to come together and thrive under one roof, where mutual support will be strengthened.” “The creation of la Maison de la francophonie de Victoria will promote the French language and culture, while allowing members of the community to strengthen the ties that unite them,” she said.
Casey Edmunds, the society’s executive director, said there are about 40,000 people in Greater Victoria’s francophone community — about 10 per cent of the population. “There’s always been a very thriving, strong francophone community here,” Edmunds said. One of the members is Louise Lalonde, who moved here from Nova Scotia and discovered the society almost right away.
The society expects to take ownership of the Bastion Square building by the end of the summer, with renovation to follow, said Edmunds, adding some accessibility upgrades have already been completed.
