Victoria Police say 'recoverable' overtime costs for monitoring protests skyrocketed in 2024 compared to 2023, as did the number of protests they monitored for safety purposes.

Victoria Police say “recoverable” overtime costs for monitoring protests skyrocketed in 2024 compared to 2023, as did the number of protests they monitored for safety purposes.

That’s up more than $1 million compared to what was seen during the first 10 months of 2023, when VicPD spent $494,100 on the same costs. However, police say the dollar figure alone does not represent the amount of work that goes into policing protests, such as planning and liaising with organizers ahead of an event.

“However, it is not our role to speak to the nature of demonstrations, as we are there to ensure safety,” police said. The B.C. Office of the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly confirmed with CHEK News that it does provide funding to VicPD for some protests outside the legislature.
