If VIA Rail and Unifor do not reach a deal by 12:01 a.m. on Monday, more than 2,000 employees will join the picket line.

Workers have issued a 72-hour strike notice to VIA Rail after negotiations have “failed to progress,” according to a press release from Unifor, Canada’s largest union in the private sector.

“VIA Rail workers are frustrated that the employer continues to push concessions and not work toward a fair and equitable collective agreement for our members,” said Scott Doherty, executive assistant to Unifor’s national president and lead negotiator. “Unifor members are highly skilled and contributed to the success of the company. We will do whatever it takes to get members the collective agreement they deserve.”

Workers represented in the strike negotiations include more than 2,000 maintenance workers, customer service personnel, chefs, and sales agents.99.4 per cent of union members voted in favour of strike action at Local 100, as did 99.3 per cent of voting members of Council 4000. According to the press release, One of the sticking points in negotiations has been VIA’s push to remove a supplemental agreement for both Unifor Council 4000 and Unifor Local 100 members. Union members believe the removal of this agreement will result in the loss of job security.
