Veterans Coalition Party of Canada Leader Lawrence Cotton said he’s not going to lose his party’s official registration status without a fight.
On Tuesday, Elections Canada announced the political party would be deregistered effective Jan. 15 after failing to get the necessary 250 members to maintain its registered party status. Losing that status means the party won’t be entitled to a variety of benefits under the Canada Elections Act, including issuing tax receipts for contributions.
Cotton, who took over as party leader last year, said he was notified by Elections Canada a few weeks ago that the party failed to meet the membership requirement after roughly 30 signatures were rejected. He said he offered to provide the necessary signatures but was told to restart the whole process.
