Marc Gasol confirms that he will return to the Los Angeles Lakers for his 13th NBA season.
The 36-year-old confirmed the news following Spain's loss to the United States in the quarterfinals at the Tokyo Olympics.. He is set to make roughly $2.7 million in Los Angeles.
Gasol will join a Lakers backcourt that now includes Anthony David and Dwight Howard who will reportedly return for his second stint with the team. Los Angeles has been busy this off-season trading for Russell Westbrook while also adding Trevor Ariza, Wayne Ellington and Kent Bazemore. The veteran centre almost saw his time with the Lakers come to an end when the team signed Andre Drummond and promised him a starting role. This pushed Gasol to a role on the bench and nearly requested a buyout in order to find more playing time on another team.
"When I signed with the team, I was signed to contribute to the team, especially the two main guys, to help their games and accomplish their goals, which is to win another championship," Gasol"It's a hard pill to swallow because I know I'm going to be out of the lineup at some point. That's never easy on the player. As a basketball player you want to play, you want to contribute, especially when you've made that commitment for that reason, but we'll see.
Gasol averaged just over 19 minutes per game in his first season with the Lakers, starting 42 of the 52 games he played in.
