Verizon is getting into the film business with a new documentary about the HIV/AIDS epidemic by
Verizon announced Tuesday evening that it has acquired a new documentary about the early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, further expanding its reach as a media company.features the stories of nurses and caregivers at San Francisco General Hospital who treated some of the first patients diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. It will premiere in June during the Los Angeles pride celebration.
"We think it is so important to talk about things that are challenging," Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg said at a marketing presentation."We have a voice, and we will use that voice to talk about things that are important to us." The documentary, along with a slew of other new content, is also part of a strategy to diversify the company Vestberg calls"Verizon 2.0."makes a certain amount of sense. Verizon has focused its growing media sector on news and nonfiction content. Between 2015 and 2017, Verizon acquired and merged AOL and Yahoo to form Oath, which includes outlets like HuffPost and Yahoo Finance.around HBO and Warner Bros., Verizon has shied away from traditional scripted entertainment.
