The hallacas, filled with a beef stew and wrapped in banana leaves, are an expression of this family’s identity and a reminder of their homeland, which they’ve all had to leave over the last few months amid an acute economic downturn and political unrest.was announced Oct. 12, after thousands of people from Venezuela overwhelmed U.S. border authorities and sought asylum or other forms of relief.
The program, however, has been criticized by many for leaving out migrants of other nationalities and offering a small amount of visas.
