The story is set to focus on Velma in high school, telling her story and how Mystery Inc. ultimately came to be. Kaling is joined by Constance Wu as Daphne, Glenn Howerton as Fred, and Sam Richardson as Shaggy.
HBO Max took to YouTube to debut a new trailer for Velma, which is set to hit the streaming service on January 12. The trailer lets audiences know the dynamics at play, with Velma declaring, "This is my story told my way." Then, as the stakes are set, with a killer on the loose, Velma finds herself on the case, interacting with the members of the yet-to-be-formed Mystery Inc., setting up their relationships in a high school setting.
Furthermore, Velma is a mature series geared toward older viewers. The show looks more cavalier with violence than most iterations of Scooby-Doo, which are aimed at younger audiences. The jokes in the trailer also utilize mature humor, which would likely be unsuitable for all audiences, with much of it likely to be understood by young viewers.
Velma also makes a few other distinct choices, like the protagonist being openly gay. While this may not shock those who grew up with the character, Velma has finally embraced it, making it canon for the series. The show also changes Shaggy, having him as a person of color, and utilizing his real name, Norville Rogers. While this could be seen as an artistic choice to set itself further apart, the series may likely tell the story of how he got the nickname Shaggy.
