“It makes sense to me that we move in unison on this matter. We are closely following developments on the West Coast of the U.S.”

VICTORIA — For the longest time, British Columbia debated the annual ritual of turning the clocks forward an hour in the spring, backwards in the fall.

Radio listeners wanted B.C. to spring forward and fall back at the same time as broadcast centres in the United States and Eastern Canada. Investment brokers hated it if the time-change didn’t dovetail with that of Toronto and New York. “Farmers said they would accept the measure if the province as a whole voted in favour,” according to the official electoral history of B.C.Twenty-four of 41 B.C. ridings turned thumbs down, preferring to keep an hour of sunlight in the morning and as opposed to gaining one in the evening.

Only four ridings voted no to booze by the glass. Apparently more British Columbians were evening drinkers than early risers. In early 2006, the then-B.C. Liberal government announced consultations on expanding the window to eight months, including most of March and the first week of November. “Prolonging DST shifts an hour of daylight time from morning to evening,” said the province. “Late afternoon and early evening are the times of greatest energy usage in the average home, where 25 per cent of electricity is used for lighting and small appliances, such as TVs, VCRs, and stereos.”
