“It has long been known that fear-based messaging does not work in terms of motivating personal climate action. “Meeting the 1.5 degrees C target requires an immediate global scale up of negative emissions using technologies that have yet to be developed,” wrote Weaver.Article content “There are more effective ways for scientists to advocate for climate policy than fear-based messaging and civil disobedience.” For one thing, they could challenge what he sees as an era of “decision-based evidence-making — the antithesis of the scientific method.”
After all his years in politics — three of them in a power-sharing partnership with the New Democrats — Weaver has few illusions about the political arena.
