The John Horgan government looks good to survive for another year, maybe longer.
VICTORIA — The date was Feb. 28, the time a few minutes before noon, and Finance Minister Carole James was bringing the budget debate to an end in the usual way.
It signals that the budget debate is coming to an end. If the motion passes, the budget will be approved in principle. The supply motion is especially critical to the life of this government, being singled out in the power-sharing agreement between the New Democrats and Greens: There being no further speakers — the Liberals remained in their seats, the Greens were not ready — the vote on the throne speech had to be called and it was.As well as that early indication that the government agenda enjoyed the confidence of the house, Green Leader Andrew Weaver soon signalled that he and his colleagues would vote in favour of the budget as well.
“The budget provides clear evidence to me that our participation in this landmark minority government has been a success. If ever there was a day that we thought we made a wrong decision back in May of 2017, never more.”
