VATICAN CITY—The Vatican on Tuesday called the conviction of Australian Cardinal George Pell for child sex abuse “painful news” and said he had been placed under precautionary restrictions by the church.
A court in Melbourne, Australia, in December had convicted Cardinal Pell of sexually assaulting two choir boys. A judge in Melbourne, where the cardinal was archbishop for five years, agreed to lift an order restricting coverage of the allegations against the cardinal, as well as details of that trial.
