Children’s performer Ginalina is a “big-city girl with a small-town heart.”

Vancouver-based Ginalina is nominated for children’s album for her fourth record, titled It Takes A Village. The trilingual artist performs in English, French and Mandarin and has been active on the kid’s music scene long enough to garner a Western Canadian Music Award’s Children’s Artist of the Year, three Parents’ Choice Awards, Canadian Children’s Book Centre honours and a Canadian Folk Music Awards’ Children’s Album of the Year nomination. This is her second Juno nod.

Her first album was Cat Stevens’ Tea for the Tillerman and songs such as Father and Son made a huge impression on her. Already a classically trained violinist and singer thanks to music education provided in the Ontario public school system, she fell in love with writing songs when she picked up her first guitar at age 16 and established herself on the singer/songwriter scene.

Sandcastle Magic was a hit. The follow-up, Forest Friends’ Nature Club, was nominated for a Juno. Focusing on songs that captured what both she and her family found exciting in their regular nature walks and other experiences and delivering the material with a decidedly country-ish twang resonated with audiences and a new career path was defined for her. Typical of any engineer, Lam approached art with a process-driven creative drive.

Lam admits that coming up with ways to apply business models to the delivery of art for art’s sake has been a steep climb. Cultivating different delivery mediums for her music has been key. Her TV show for Kids’ Knowledge Network, titled Ginalina’s Music Club, has been a particularly effective way to reach a wide audience that is often dispersed all over the country.
