Vancouver park board to vote on allowing alcohol in 22 city parks
If approved Monday, the pilot project wouldn’t be able to start until mid-August because staff says authorizing public consumption of liquor in Vancouver parks requires an amendment to the B.C. Liquor Control and Licensing Act from the Lieutenant-governor.The liquor consumption in parks bylaw and pilot program was originally put before the park board commission on June 8 and again on July 6, but both times it was sent back to staff for revisions.
“Especially in a time of pandemic we should encourage folks to stick close to home and we should discourage them from gathering up in one of those 10 specific areas.” A proposed bylaw being put before the Vancouver park board on Monday night would allow park goers to consume alcohol between the hours of 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. in designated areas at 22 different parks spread out across the city. The new proposal has been pumped up to include 22 parks, including three located in Kitsilano and two each in Hastings-Sunrise, Kerrisdale and downtown.
