Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim 's plan to revitalize the Downtown Eastside neighbourhood has sparked criticism, with former councillor Jean Swanson labelling his proposal to pause supportive housing construction as 'Trumpian.' Swanson, a prominent anti-poverty activist, expressed concern that Sim's plans, which include halting the construction of new supportive housing units and reducing the concentration of social services in the Downtown Eastside , lack compassion and amount to victim blaming.
She emphasized the fundamental role of housing in health and safety, warning that thousands on the city's supportive housing waitlist could die without new units being built. Sim unveiled his plan at a forum hosted by the Save Our Streets coalition, a group of businesses grappling with issues of crime and public safety in areas like the Downtown Eastside. He argued that 77 per cent of Metro Vancouver's supportive services are located in Vancouver, which represents only 25 per cent of the region's population. Sim attributed some of the Downtown Eastside's challenges to a 'cycle of hyper-concentrated social services,' advocating for the integration of the neighbourhood into the broader city fabric. B.C. Housing and Municipal Affairs Minister Ravi Kahlon indicated his intention to engage with Sim to understand the specifics of the plan. While expressing understanding for Sim's desire for other communities to contribute more to supportive housing, Kahlon stressed the urgency of building new housing in Vancouver and across the region. He warned that failing to do so would result in more individuals living on the streets or in encampments, creating an environment that is less safe for everyone. Sim's press secretary, Kalith Nanayakkara, stated that further details of the plan would be released closer to the date when the mayor presents a motion to council. Russell Maynard, a seasoned community harm reduction worker, voiced his opinion on social media platform X, stating that Sim's plan represents 'the wrong solution to the right problem.' Meanwhile, Coun. Peter Meiszner, a member of Sim's ABC Vancouver party's majority on council, expressed optimism about the plan on X, characterizing it as a 'long overdue change of direction in city policy to build a healthier neighbourhood.' Swanson, however, remained unconvinced, pointing out the council's previous actions to eliminate several supportive housing units since taking power in 2022. She warned that the lack of new supportive housing would inevitably lead to increased homelessness, arguing that displacing individuals from the Downtown Eastside would not benefit anyone.
