Vancouver takes on the Memorial Cup\u002Dhost Kamloops Blazers in the first round of the playoffs with a core group back from last year.
One of the similarities between that Everett series and this Kamloops series is that Dyck has an especially good read on the opposing bench and vice versa. He’s coached with Everett bench boss Dennis Williams on Hockey Canada assignments. They’re friendly and keep in contact during the regular season.
Hay, 69, is one of the most storied coaches in league history. He was head coach for Blazer Cup wins in 1994 and ’95, and then again for the Giants in 2007. “I had a chance to visit with him during our last game in Kamloops. He came over and it was great. First-class guy, first class coach. He’s one of the best.”“The way they check, he’s made a real big difference,” Dyck said. “You can see that Don Hay influence.”
These Giants have 13 players back from last year’s Vancouver team that beat Everett before falling to then-No. 2-seeded Kamloops in six games in the second round. Principle among them is netminder Jesper Vikman, the Vegas Golden Knights’ prospect from Sweden. His 50-save shutout in a 3-0 road win over Everett in Game 5 last year is one of the best goaltending performances in franchise history.
