She believes the application is a pushback against candidates who are using Chinese characters despite not having that cultural background. Two Vision Vancouver candidates — incumbent trustee Wong and council candidate Barzegari — said they were dismayed to learn their usual names are at risk of being removed from the ballot. They said they are known by these names to large groups of voters.

Hagiwara noted in the application that she was made aware of complaints about Yan’s use of Chinese characters after the election.by school board candidates Sophia Woo and Ken Denike who objected to Yan being allowed to use Chinese characters on the ballot.
