Vancouver council unanimously approved a plan Tuesday aimed at helping the city\u0027s beloved but struggling Chinatown neighbourhood.

The plan includes expanded street cleaning services and the opening of a satellite city office in the neighbourhood, which was a campaign promise of ABC Vancouver, the party now with a majority on council.Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion delivered straight to your inbox at 7 a.m., Monday to Friday.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

Council heard Tuesday from several Chinatown leaders and business owners, who said the neighbourhood is grappling with increasing crime and street disorder. “We heard from a lot of speakers recently that this represents hope for a neighbourhood that has been on life support,” ABC Coun. Sarah Kirby-Yung, who introduced the motion, said before the meeting. “The message, I think, that council really wants to send is that help is coming, and there is more to do in this historic neighbourhood.”

ABC Mayor Ken Sim said Chinatown is an important part of Vancouver’s culture and history, and he hopes these measures, combined with other spending on public safety, will help make the neighbourhood more vibrant, safe and welcoming.
