Vancouver Canucks Embrace Full Rebuild for 2026-27 NHL Season

The Vancouver Canucks enter the 2026-27 NHL season committed to a full rebuild, prioritizing long-term draft success over short-term playoff hopes.

The Vancouver Canucks are entering the 2026-27 NHL season with a clear and difficult plan: a full rebuild. The team understands that this coming season will be painful, with almost certainly no Stanley Cup playoff hockey in British Columbia. There will be long stretches of poor play, and the Canucks are expected to lose often. But the organization believes this path is necessary.

Canucks Avoid Mushy Middle Trap

The last thing any Canucks fan should want is a retool-on-the-fly. The worst possible outcome would be for the Canucks to become a mushy middle team. Such a team is too good to earn a top spot in the 2027 NHL Draft, yet too bad to reach the post-season. Vancouver General Manager Ryan Johnson has the mandate to rebuild, and that will require extraordinary patience from Canucks fans.

To see how long a full rebuild takes, one can look at two other teams in the Pacific Division. The San Jose Sharks have been rebuilding in earnest since General Manager Mike Grier took the job in July 2022. In the first three years of Grier's tenure, the Sharks finished either seventh or eighth place in their division.

Sharks And Flames Rebuild Timelines

The Sharks have truly turned the corner, improving their win total by a stunning 19 wins in 2025-26. Even then, it still was not good enough to make the playoffs. San Jose is still a ways away from rising to the top of the Pacific and going far in the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Calgary Flames have not made the playoffs in the past four seasons. Since General Manager Craig Conroy took over in May 2023, Calgary has shown why it does not make sense to only make some tweaks.

The Flames finished fifth in the division in Conroy's first year, then improved to fourth in his second year. In both those seasons, Calgary still missed the playoffs. That is why the Flames' rebuild has not been as fruitful as San Jose's rebuild. It was only last season, when Conroy more or less finished stripping down his roster by removing a slew of veteran players, that Calgary was truly moving in the right direction. After falling two spots to land the sixth-overall pick despite having the NHL's fourth-worst record, it is incumbent on Conroy to grit his teeth, stay the course, and allow Calgary to endure more pain as the Flames try to build a core that can rival their Pacific opponents.

What Success Looks Like For Vancouver

Basically every pre-season prediction will have the Vancouver Canucks in 32nd place. So what would success actually look like in what feels like a lost season? All things considered, it is clear that the Canucks have to do what Grier and the Sharks are doing, and what Conroy and the Flames are finally doing. One does need some luck in the draft lottery to do what San Jose has done of late. But the alternative, always chasing your tail and never getting anywhere, is not an option at all for Johnson and Vancouver's front office.

The Canucks have finally committed to a rebuild in all areas of the organization. With a bolstered pipeline of prospects after a successful 2026 NHL Draft, the team is fully focused on the future. Eventually, the pain will be worth it for Vancouver. The organization and its fans must remain patient as the rebuild unfolds.
