Cade went to LSU, where he played two seasons with Braden. And, sure enough, Cade is now a top prospect for the Toronto Blue Jays, after they picked him in the second round last summer following three seasons with the Tigers. He’s No. 7 on Baseball America’s Blue Jays’ Top-30 farmhands list, and No. 8 on the MLB Pipeline version.
Doughty says he “wasn’t close at all,” to opting to go to pro ball directly out of high school. The Detroit Tigers wound up picking him in the 39th round in 2019, but that was merely a Hail Mary bid on their part. “I talked to teams. I had the opportunities but I never wanted to do that to be honest,” Doughty said of jumping to pro from high school. “LSU was always the goal for me. All the ties, I grew up bleeding purple and gold. It was too good for me to miss out on. It was a pretty easy decision.”
