Vancouver artist Casey Wei has been awarded the $25,000 Philip B. Lind Emerging Artist Prize for her moving video installation, 'The Zhang Clan,' which explores her mother's family's migration from China to Australia following the Tiananmen Square massacre.
Vancouver artist Casey Wei has been awarded this year's $25,000 Philip B. Lind Emerging Artist Prize. Wei was one of five finalists who showcased their work at The Polygon Gallery in North Vancouver as part of the Lind Biennial exhibition. Her video installation, titled 'The Zhang Clan,' utilizes three screens to examine her mother's family's journey from China to Melbourne, Australia following the Tiananmen Square massacre.
The jurors for the Lind Prize commended Wei's work for 'upending the conventions of documentary filmmaking' and recognized her successful transition from her DIY aesthetics and community-based art practice to a gallery setting. The Philip B. Lind Emerging Artist Prize is presented biennially to a promising artist based in British Columbia. This year's other contenders included Mena El Shazly, Karice Mitchell, Dion Smith-Dokkie, and Parumveer Walia. The exhibition will remain open to the public at The Polygon Gallery until February 2nd.
