Incumbent Valerie Plante has won a second term as mayor, beating former mayor Denis Coderre by about 16 percentage points and 50,000 votes.
Montreal "is the envy of the world for its quality of life and its commitment to ecology," she said.
It was Coderre's second loss to Plante. He gave a concession speech about 10:45, not long after Plante appeared. Speaking later in English, he said he believes English speakers are feeling alienated right now and need more "bridge-builders." "Mouvement Montreal is here to stay and we're just getting started," he said at around 9:45 p.m., before Plante spoke, in remarks beginning in English.
"People who are dedicated to social justice, dedicated to improving our environment, dedicated to building communities for all," he called them, saying the party wasn't about him, one person, running for office, but about advancing a new political vision. In her speech, Plante also spoke at some length about what she heard on the campaign trail and what her party envisions for its new mandate.
