File photo from 2013.The University of Texas System Board of Regents voted Thursday to create a new college to house the Civitas Institute, a UT-Austin-based center championed by conservative legislators and dedicated to the study of limited government.

The board approved the flagship university's School of Civic Leadership in a regular meeting, rendering unnecessary a proposed bill to turn the existing Civitas Institute into a civic leadership college. The legislation had not progressed beyond a committee this session.An inaugural dean, who will be appointed before December, will have the authority to hire up to 20 new tenure and tenure-track faculty over the next three years.

The school will offer undergraduate and graduate degrees. In addition to housing the Civitas Institute, the college could eventually support the Clements Center for National Security, according to the system's motion approved Thursday. “As the state’s flagship public University, UT Austin has a longstanding tradition and unique responsibility to equip and train civic leaders for our state and nation, and this new school reflects an expanded commitment for the next generation of leadership,” Hartzell said in a statement.
