Group play continues Friday as the U.S. Men's National Team makes its World Cup debut against Paraguay.
The four-year wait is finally over. The United States men's national team is back in the World Cup — one that will see them serve as co-hosts with Mexico and Canada .
The U.S. opens up group play against Paraguay, a team that they beat in a November friendly 2-1. Seven months later, three valuable points are on the line in Group D.Both sides are dealing with injury concerns. U.S. center back Chris Richards has been out since mid-May with an ankle injury, but he said he expects to be ready to play. Paraguay attacker Julio Enciso suffered a muscle injury in their final warm-up match.
His status for the match is questionable. A victory would put either team on the path to earning a spot in the knockout round, which the USMNT has reached in each of its last three World Cup appearances. Paraguay advanced out of the group the last time it qualified for the tournament in 2010, when it reached the quarterfinals.
