For sale: 1991 Lotus Carlton. Supercar performance in a saloon silhouette - and this one's undergone a major restoration...

The block bores were inspected and found to be literally as new with no scoring whatsoever, with the OE Pistons also in as new condition.

The valves were replaced which included brand new sodium filled items on the hot side, which was followed by an extremely important modification as follows. The stack item has actually been hard wired directly to the oil pressure warning light on the OE clock arrangement, which has resulted in an absolute full proof monitoring and alert of any issues the engine may suffer with an alarm/buzzer.

Any potential owner needs to take note of the above and consider the work has been done with safety in mind, and thus has been carried out to absolute perfecting results. The oil system houses a set of bespoke exact factory hoses which run between the two-brand new Mocal Oil coolers, these hoses extend to the newly fabricated tubular power steering cooler which is always heavily pitted where it passes in-front of all three radiators.

As with so many items on this car that car the unique 90393-part number, this just cannot be purchased anymore, and I genuinely believe that you won’t find another for sale again, ever! A completely new set of OE spec silicon hoses that pass throughout the engine bay, purchased through the Autobahn stormers club .

All in all, very hard to fault this engine bay in any way at all, you can probably tell I like things to be presented properly and this engine bay is a work of art to complement this car.The car has had a brand new OE petrol tank fitted with a genuine Motorsport 044 Bosch fuel pump fitted which was purchased and checked with factory coded seal to confirm it was a genuine item.

These have been complimented by brand new Bosch O2 sensors, which are nestled under a pair of brand newly built T25 Turbos, which also house 360-degree bearings. The Diff casing was also blasted and zinc primed before being re-painting in silver ahead of fitting. At which stage he painted the calliper housings with a light dusting of silver so as to retain the raw motorsport texture of the alloy.

Please note that Lotus ran the brake line in new copper, which was a “Hand bent” affair but as this was a job by hand at the factory, I decided to leave this in place to ensure authenticity and a slight quirkiness, other areas of “Patina” exist on this car but only in the right places. Upon purchasing this car and discussions with my paint shop, I was reminded that what corrosion you can see on these cars, “is only the tip of the ice-burg”! how true!Consequently, these are always susceptible to tin worm from day 1, I did not want any sort of repair behind the fibre glass panels and favoured obtaining as new doors with absolutely zero rust and in a perfect condition, complete with factory wax on the inner skin, incidentally we kept the old doors as a reference for the kit...

The Shell itself although structurally uncompromised, was found to be suffering with outer sills, rear quarter tin worm, this is a well-known issue with all Lotus Carltons so nothing to fear but definitely something that needed to be tackled. Some LC’s also suffered with cracking to the rear under the immense torque to the rear, and although my car had no evidence of this, we thought it prudent to strengthen these points by way of seem welding.

The underside of the car was then primed in a special zinc-based paint to prevent any further corrosion, before being painted over in a matt black. This was carried out by Alan Ribbens of Ribbens & son, considered one of the best painters in Kent, and in my opinion the best. The bonnet heated washer jets were also replaced for brand new items at great expense, as was the rear boot textured trim.

I personally think they look better without them, but the new owner can decide for themselves and retro fit, the issue is they are old, and when a car looks this good down the sides, the genuine items would not compliment it. As a result, everything locks and un-locks as it should and at the press of a button, all windows/regulators work as they should as well.Speakers have all been renewed with hidden Kenwood top quality items to match OE and an amplifier .

The boot floor has been sound deadened again to match OE with the correct black deadening matting, warmed into position and fitted perfectly beneath the carpeted matting. You can see by the specification of this car, together with the folders documenting at least 60k in invoices alone, not to mention the Vauxhall folder filled with historic paperwork that was superseded by the restoration.

I say that with an air of confidence and to bolster this, most of my parts were sourced by Barry France, a man that not only used to own this actual car, but an ex-head parts man at Vauxhall with micro flitch slides to all parts and bespoke numbers. The fact remains here if you want the best that’s out there, please go and view the others, then give us a call and pop over for a viewing.
