Haws, simply put, was a warrior. A man who lives, still, as the greatest example of a massive Polynesian bloodline’s value in hard work, who single-handedly moved mobile homes until a few months before his death at 90 years old. It was thus his wish, before death, to be buried at Iosepa, and that his family would use no machinery in the process: no bulldozers, no excavators, digging solely by hand.
“Being ocean people, I mean – think about your tears,” Ruth said. “Your tears are saltwater. That’s no accident.” Ruth and Cobb’s father, Daniel, are now amicable co-parents, sitting together for Mason’s games, admirably sticking tight to the values of family. But childhood pain has twisted around Cobb like armor, melding spikes that protrude outward instead of piercing his own thick skin, a man who’s grown to love life when it’s at its lowest point.
“It’s kinda crazy – I can hear the horn so clear in the game,” Cobb said. “You wouldn’t think so, it being so loud, but that noise is just so distinct that it calms my soul.”
