A recent tax filing shows lavish salaries atop the nonprofit organization.
The organization’s second-in-command, chief operating officer, took home more than $1.6 million last year, and five other executives had pay packages totaling more than $250,000.
According to USATF’s Form 990, a tax form that nonprofit organizations file and that must be made public, Siegel’s pay broke down as follows: Siegel’s pay is thought to far exceed that of any other national governing body chief. The top two executives of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee , which oversees all NGBs like USATF, earned $1 million and $670,000 respectively in 2021. That organization’s revenue in 2021 was $457.6 million.USATF’s Form 990 noted that $2.5 million was previously reported as deferred on an earlier year’s 990.
According to that financial statement, Siegel was supposed to get $500,000 in 2021; not $2.5 million. Around the running community, a few former athletes and coaches expressed their dismay at the level of executive pay, when athletes often have to leave the sport because they can’t afford to train. She called on USATF to make a statement. “If USATF has a good reasons for this, they owe a public explanation to all the athletes and stakeholders who volunteer their time for free as to why track and field is such a financial anomaly in the Olympic sports world.”
