New US tariffs taking effect Tuesday are causing anxiety in the forestry-dependent community of Campbell River, British Columbia. Locals fear job losses, mill closures, and a decline in the local economy as the tariffs threaten their trade relationship with the US.
Storm clouds gathered over Campbell River Sunday, matching the mood on the ground — as the weight of new U.S. tariffs, which take effect Tuesday, hit home in the forestry-reliant community.
Nelson’s logging company alone employs 40 men and women of the many thousands employed by the industry on North Vancouver Island. “It’s going to hurt everybody. People are already looking at labels and cancelling trips to the states,” said Ogilvie. “This will impact everybody. And it will impact downtown Vancouver as well. The degrees of separation are not many,” said James Furney, Mayor of Port McNeill.
