US Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall will demonstrate the safety of autonomous F-16s by flying in one himself.

The USAF is looking to automate some of its fleet with its Viper Experimentation and Next-gen Operations Model autonomous test bed program. Last week, it delivered three F-16 fighters to Eglin Air Force Base for conversion to full AI control.USAF Secretary Frank Kendall will be joined by a pilot on the F-16 flight, though they will both mainly watch on as the autonomous F-16 does its thing.

Kendall also said the Air Force’s automation program is making strong progress, thanks largely to ongoing research from DARPA.It is worth noting that, though no one will fly the F-16, there will be some human algorithm tinkering involved.
