While at sxsw, we spoke with UponEntry filmmakers Alejandro Rojas and Juan Sebastián Vásquez about how they built on their real-life immigration experiences to craft a harrowing yet realstic tale of xenophobia:

Filmmakers Alejandro Rojas and Juan Sebastián Vásquez brought their feature film directorial debut, Upon Entry, to the South By Southwest film festival earlier this month. The duo also co-wrote the screenplay, which was inspired by various aspects of their own experiences with immigration and the stories of their loved ones.

A year later, for no apparent reason, it wasn't approved. That kind of triggered the idea that a couple goes through an inspection and an interview that’s really uncomfortable. What happens when they land? We just started writing from there. Juan Sebastián Vásquez: It's really important. I think it has a lot of layers that we know may unfortunately get lost, but we didn't want to explain it or be too obvious. But at the very beginning of the movie, you can hear a radio show in the taxi, and they’re talking about building the wall in Catalan; making jokes about Trump's walls plan and trying to bring up a wall around Catalonia to make Catalonia independent.

It would always be a situation where, if someone had an idea, the other one would have another idea that it would push further and further. Hopefully, we would get to a level that we weren't at before. And Bruna was always on the wishlist – always. She's such an amazing, magical, natural actress. And once she said yes, it was great because she also connected to the character. Being from Barcelona, she understood the character inside out.

I think the press covers a lot of the horrible situations people go through by just risking their life and walking, because they don't have the privilege to buy a plane ticket to land in an airport in order to try to live in a different place. But even with that privilege, you find a lot of violence when you arrive in a new place. Whether they just discovered it or are already terrified of what's happening, a lot of people are relating to the story.
