The Panthers outshot the Dinos 10-2 in the first period and took a 2-0 lead into the intermission on goals by Drake Pilon and Andrew Picco . Pilon’s goal came off a rocket of a shot from just inside the faceoff circle on the right wing that went just under the cross bar. The referee, positioned to the right of the Calgary goal, immediately indicated goal, the goal light came, and the review confirmed it was a good goal.
The Dinos, Canada West champions and coming off a 25-3 regular season, got on the board with a power-play goal off the stick of Bradley Schoonbaert at 10:26 of the middle period. Although the Dinos put a bit of a push on, the Panthers didn’t panic and went into the second intermission with a 2-1 lead.
