Mediation between the Ontario government and the union representing 55,000 education workers has ended with no deal that would avert a planned strike on Friday.

Education Minister Stephen Lecce says the province is proceeding with legislation that would impose a contract on the workers represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees and ban them from striking, with steep fines if they don’t comply.

The Education Ministry has sent a memo to school boards telling them to make every effort possible to keep schools open but to move to remote learning if they can’t safely keep students in class. Locally, the Durham Catholic District School Board, Durham District School Board, Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board and the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland Clarington District School Board said schools will be closed for in-person learning on Friday.
