The demolition of the historic downtown fire hall was underway on Wednesday afternoon.

Demolition of the building, which served as Prince George’s primary fire hall from 1956 to 2021, was expected to disrupt traffic in the area until May 30. One lane was expected to be closed at the intersection of Seventh Avenue and Dominion Street from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from Tuesday to May 30, according to information released by the City of Prince George on Tuesday.

Heavy equipment was on-site and crews were fencing in the area as of 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Demolition on the west side of the building started on Wednesday morning. The Prince George Fire Rescue Service relocated to the new Fire Hall No. 1 on Massey Drive in January, 2021. According to information released by the city earlier this month, work on the site will only occur between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday. Water will be sprayed to reduce the amount of dust generated by the demolition.

The city plans to recycle all concrete, metal and wood from the building. Once the demolition is complete, the site will be used as a temporary gravel parking lot until the city’s Civic Core District Plan is completed.
