UP IN (THE BIG) SMOKE: Redblacks head to T.O. for last roadie of '23
Some firsts are great and wonderful while others are absolutely, positively no fun at all.In his sixth Canadian Football League season but a rookie Ottawa Redblack, the 29-year-old linebacker is about to miss the playoffs for the first time in his pro career.
The last two Santos-Knox is referring to is a home-and-home series with the league-leading Toronto Argos that begins Saturday in “The Big Smoke” and concludes, following Ottawa’s bye next week, with the season finale at TD Place on Oct. 28th. Those two embarrassing losses occurred while the Redblacks still had a faint pulse in the playoff race.“I truly felt that until we had double zeros on the board Monday, we legitimately thought had a shot to, you know, crossover and do something that hasn’t been done,” Santos-Knox said of what had been a slim possibility of entering the post-season tournament through the West Division. “That being said, we are in the position that we are now.
Head coach Bob Dyce expects his team to play with “a really high compete level,” despite there’s nothing on the line, standings-wise, except the first overall pick that comes with dead last in the league.“The thing that’s great about this group is they’ve fought in a great effort the majority of the season.
“As pros and as men with pride, you’re not going to see a team quit out there,” he said. “We’re going to still finish the season strong and build on to next year. There’s a lot that we can still do in two games.”“Obviously, whenever you’re playing for the playoffs and all that, it gives you a little extra edge,” said quarterback Dustin Crum.
