The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) continues to provide crucial aid to Palestinians in Gaza despite an Israeli law banning its operations and increasing hostility towards its staff. International agencies warn of severe consequences for the fragile ceasefire and humanitarian situation if UNRWA's work is disrupted. Meanwhile, the number of patients waiting for evacuation from Gaza remains high, raising concerns about medical emergencies.

United Nations and Red Crescent workers prepare the aid for distribution to Palestinians at an UNRWA warehouse in Deir Al-Balah, Gaza Strip, on Oct. 23, 2023.The UN Palestinian relief agency said its humanitarian work across the occupied territories and Gaza was still ongoing on Friday despite an Israel i ban that took effect a day before and what it described as hostility toward its staff.

She said any disruptions to its work in Gaza would put a ceasefire deal that halted the war between Israel and Hamas at risk. Touma said that its Palestinian staff in the West Bank and East Jerusalem are facing difficulties, citing examples of stone-throwing and hold-ups at checkpoints without attributing blame.

Before the agreement, experts had warned of imminent famine in parts of northern Gaza. Supplies have since risen and the World Food Programme said that more than 32,000 tonnes of food had entered Gaza since the Jan. 19 deal took effect.
