You've no doubt encountered dozens of rainbows in your life, and have likely even taken in a double version or two of that familiar colorful arc in the sky. But have you ever come across a fog bow?
Brendan Ramsey did just that earlier this week while camping with friends near Blewett Pass. His group was up over 6,200 feet when the murky vision became apparent in the sky.
That location was key. To see a fog bow, the sun needs to be at a low angle relative to the existing fog or cloud bank. Brendan's group was at a high enough vantage point to see the bow, as this phenomena is usually observed from atop a cliff or from a plane. Fog bows are most often reported in the morning or evening, when the sun is at a 30 to 40 degree angle in relation to the fog.
Like its rainbow cousin, a fog bow requires two ingredients to form: water and sunlight. Similar to how you'd spot a rainbow, stand with your back to the sun so that the rays are coming in behind you. The bow develops as the light is refracted within the fog or low cloud deck. However, because the droplets are so tiny compared to raindrops, the arc is colorless, or only throws off a very weak red or blue hue at best.
Due to the faint color, fog bows are sometimes known as a 'white rainbow,' or my favorite, a 'ghost bow.'
