Tahoe’s environment is facing “the largest and most significant” changes in 50 years.

The monthly average air temperatures for June and July in 2021 were the warmest recorded since 2010 — with an increase in nighttime temperatures driving much of that rise. Rising air temperatures mean that more precipitation is falling as rain, instead of snow, and what diminished snowpack Tahoe does have is melting earlier than it used to.

Given the low precipitation of the past year, the report says it’s “almost certain” Tahoe will drop below its natural rim this coming fall and lose its connection with the Truckee River, its only outlet.of Lake Tahoe’s water in 1968 was 50.4 degrees Fahrenheit, but in 2021, it was 53.1 degrees, the third warmest year on record. On July 24, 2021, it reached 73.5 degrees, the highest all year.

Algae blooms occur in places frequently visited by people, the report says, and millions of people visit Lake Tahoe’s shoreline every year. The shorelines in Tahoe City and South Lake Tahoe are seeing the most extreme algae blooms in the basin. In addition to unprecedented algal blooms on Tahoe’s shoreline, UC Davis researchers describe"the collapse of the zooplankton and Mysis shrimp populations; an abrupt change in the phytoplankton community." Scientists are still learning about the ways these shifts are related, but the presence of all three at the same time is something to take note of.

“Any one of these changes would be a big deal in a single year,” said Geoffrey Schladow, director of TERC. “All three occurring at once is particularly alarming and a huge opportunity to learn lessons that can be used to inform future management.”
