Nearly 50,000 academic workers across the sprawling University of California system walked off the job and onto picket lines Monday, demanding higher wages and better benefits

The teaching assistants, researchers and postdoctoral fellows failed to reach a deal with the university system over the weekend as they demanded pay increases to match the rising cost of housing and inflation. The employees are represented by the United Auto Workers, which called the strike the largest in the history of U.S. higher education.
