Summer break is still months away, but Universal Orlando Resort employees have an extra reason to be excited thanks to a recent announcement the park made.

Starting June 4, park employees will be given a starting pay of $17 an hour, the company's president Karen Irwin announced in a letter.

In addition, some people who are already employed at the park and have worked at it for some time can expect an increase in their pay based on the new rates and their time with the company, according to FOX 35 Orlando. "Wage is just one element of our continued focus on building an even better Universal Orlando work experience," read a statement from a Universal Parks & Resorts spokesperson.

"We aspire to be the employer of choice in this market — providing an inclusive environment where Team Members are proud to work, have an opportunity to grow and feel a real sense of purpose and belonging."Beyond the increased wages, the park has also elevated its 401 match and tuition reimbursement programs, added compassion leave, doubled its parental leave, and enhanced its family planning benefits, among other improved and added benefits.

The park is also working on improving its work environment, which includes upgrading its break areas as well as its back-of-house restrooms. The increased benefits and pay at Universal Orlando Resort comes as a union at its competitor, Walt Disney World, has rejected an offer from the park and instead asked Disney to pay its workers an immediate $18 an hour.
