Universal broadband? Warren has a plan for that
Warren laid out her broadband vision in an op-ed in the, offering a mix of criticism of big business and regulators who seem to put the interests of industry ahead of consumers, and a call for the government to take a stronger role in delivering essential broadband services to low-income, rural and tribal areas that are underserved.
"FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, a former Verizon lawyer, has been an effective agent for ISPs," she continued.
So Warren is pitching an $85 billion federal grant program to offer a public option for internet service, overseen by a new agency, the Office of Broadband Access. Under that program, the federal government would pay 90 cents on the dollar for construction of the new networks, but grant recipients would be obligated to deliver service to every home in their application area, including a low-cost option and one plan offering speeds of at least 100 megabits per second.
