UnitedHealth is flexing Optum's big data muscles to help break down barriers preventing value-based care from catching on with providers:
The program will connect all of its partnered providers in a given region to establish a"digital ecosystem" where patients and providers can access health data in real time and set up a value-based payment structure. And if the program performs well, we could see UnitedHealth integrate OptumInsights with more providers in OptumHealth's already gargantuan care network: The company employs or is affiliated with approximately 50,000 physicians.
And potential cost savings are likely why UnitedHealthcare is so bullish on providers switching away from fee-for-service payments: Despite slow growth in VBC arrangements, UnitedHealthcare declared last year that it aims to coverpeople under VBC by 2025, ten times more than the 15 million the company claimed in 2018.
But equipping providers with OptumInsights' tech knowhow could be just what the doctor ordered for the company's partner organizations and others who might be struggling to meet VBC standards. Providers' dissatisfaction is likely being driven, at least in part, by the fact that many don't have the tech infrastructure they need to thrive in a VBC setting: NearlyThe bigger picture:
Optum's recent tie-up with John Muir Health could provide a blueprint for the company's future growth strategy when it comes to VBC. Optum announced it would be assuming control of"," or 10% of the total work force at John Muir Health — a large, independent health system outside San Francisco.
