United Airlines said it was reducing service to Asia amid broader signs that air travel demand is weakening in the U.S. as the coronavirus epidemic spreads worldwide
that coronavirus is bound to spread in the U.S. and that local governments, businesses and schools should begin to prepare.
United, which is the leading U.S. carrier to Asia, earlier this week withdrew its earnings forecast for the year due to uncertainties over the impact of coronavirus. Delta and American have also cut flights to China, and Delta to South Korea following a spike in coronavirus cases there. The epidemic could cost the travel industry $46.6 billion per month in income from business travelers, the industry group estimates.
There are increasing risks that U.S. airlines could see a decline in travel in peak periods such as spring break and early summer, Deutsche Bank analyst Michael Linenberg warned in a note Thursday. He cut his rating on American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United, Alaska, JetBlue and Spirit to hold from buy.
