Insiders have questioned the massive reorganization and the 'too nice' culture he presided over.Editor's note: On Sunday, Unilever said that CEO Alan Jope will retire at the end of 2023. Jope's retirement will cap five years as the company's top executive and a career of more than three decades in various roles at Unilever.

said it would lay off 1,500 employees. It's also regrouping its brands into five product-focused divisions: Beauty & Wellbeing, Personal Care, Home Care, Nutrition, and Ice Cream. "We're making these changes to become a simpler, faster, more focused and competitive business," a Unilever spokesperson told Insider about the company's reorganization. The spokesperson also directed Insider to Jope's comments on Unilever's most recent earnings call.

Insiders say Unilever's reorganization began before Peltz was interested in Unilever. One former executive said the shake-up is due in part to changes Unilever experienced during the pandemic. Before the pandemic, Unilever thrived in developing markets such as India, the Philippines, and Brazil. Those countries were"powerhouses" for the company, according to the executive: Their populations were growing, providing an attractive consumer base.

Its lineup of cleaning products in the US is scant, the former executive told Insider. Meanwhile, companies like P&G and Clorox were ready with wipes, sprays, and other items that were in high demand. Had the deal had gone through, Unilever would have become a company focused almost entirely on personal-care products, cosmetics, and some home cleaning products. Food brands like Ben & Jerry's and Hellmann's would have become a separate company.
